Designing an Americana Nursery
Preparing for the new addition to our family has been an exciting experience, and one of the most fun parts of the planning process is designing the nursery.
With a little boy on the way we decided to lean into a classic style while drawing inspiration from our American heritage.
Rooted in tradition and nostalgia, the Americana style evokes a sense of patriotism and rustic simplicity that we want our little boy to grow up in.
There are a few design rules that I am trying to adhere by to get the styling and feeling I want to create.
Creating an Americana Nursery

One of our favorite places to visit and vacation is Williamsburg, Virginia. We fell in love with Virginia many years ago when we lived in Richmond but it wasn’t until we left the beautiful state that we truly realized how special it is.
We have drawn much of our inspiration from our time spent in Virginia and frequent travels back.
The aim is to create a room that feels as comforting and prideful as the state of Virigina.
Deep and Rich Colors
When trying to create this style I am drawn to dark and rich colors.
The style is more than just red, white and blue.
I imagine the countryside and historical colors that are earthy yet bold: rich blues, dusty browns and vibrant greens.
I think playing it safe with a warm white or light gray would do this style disservice so I wanted to embrace the boldness .
We ended up choosing Caviar by Sherwin Williams for our Americana Nursery.
Plaid and Tartan
I love using plaid and tartan to ground the space.
It feels rustic, classic and charming.
Adding accents of plain and tartan also feels timeless and less likely to go out of style or be replaced in the future.
Adding Floral Accents
I don’t know anyone that can successfully maintain a house full of flowers.
I have tried numerous times and HAVE NEVER been able to do it.
Faux flowers give me the same bright and lively feel without any stress.
My favorite flower is the hydrangea and in a room full or dark and bold statements it’s nice to have something just simply pretty.
It makes the space feel balanced from all the masculine elements.
Love of the American Countryside
Besides the Bald Eagle, horses are another iconic symbol of American culture and heritage.
From the wild west to equestrian events, horses are deeply rooted in American hertiage.
To me, horses represent the spirit of adventure, freedom, and resilience.
A must have for a little boy’s nursery.
Old Glory
How can I not add the American Flag in an Americana nursery?
The true symbol of everything we want to encourage: freedom, sacrifice and hope.
